The First Lover Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DBDB EFEF GHGH EIEI EJEJ

As o'er the vessel's side she leantA
She saw the swimmer in the seaB
With eager eyes on her intentC
Come down come down and swim with meB
-
So weary was she of her lotD
Tired of the ship's monotonyB
She straightway all the world forgotD
Save the young swimmer in the seaB
-
So when the dusky dying lightE
Left all the water dark and dimF
She softly in the friendly nightE
Slipped down the vessel's side to himF
-
Intent and brilliant brightly darkG
She saw his burning eager eyesH
And many a phosphorescent sparkG
About his shoulders fall and riseH
-
As through the hushed and Eastern nightE
They swam together hand in handI
Or lay and laughed in sheer delightE
Full length upon the level sandI
-
Ah soft delusive purple nightE
Whose darkness knew no vexing moonJ
Ah cruel needless dawning lightE
That trembled in the sky too soonJ
