They lay the slender body downA
With all its wealth of wetted hairB
Only a daughter of the townA
But very young and slight and fairB
-
The eyes whose light one cannot seeC
Are sombre doubtless like the tressesD
The mouth's soft curvings seem to beC
A roseate series of caressesD
-
And where the skin has all but driedE
The air is sultry in the roomF
Upon her breast and either sideE
It shows a soft and amber bloomF
-
By women here who knew her lifeG
A leper husband I am toldH
Took all this loveliness to wifeG
When it was barely ten years oldH
-
And when the child in shocked dismayI
Fled from the hated husband's careB
He caught and tied her so they sayI
Down to his bedside by her hairB
-
To some low quarter of the townA
Escaped a second time she flewJ
Her beauty brought her great renownA
And many lovers here she knewJ
-
When as the mystic Eastern nightK
With purple shadow filled the airB
Behind her window framed in lightK
She sat with jasmin in her hairB
-
At last she loved a youth who choseL
To keep this wild flower for his ownM
He in his garden set his roseL
Where it might bloom for him aloneM
-
Cholera came her lover diedE
Want drove her to the streets againN
And women found her there who triedE
To turn her beauty into gainO
-
But she who in those garden waysP
Had learnt of Love would now no moreQ
Be bartered in the market placeR
For silver as in days beforeQ
-
That former life she strove to changeS
She sold the silver off her armsT
While all the world grew cold and strangeS
To broken health and fading charmsT
-
Till finding lovers but no friendU
Nor any place to rest or hideE
She grew despairing at the endU
Slipped softly down a well and diedE
-
And yet how short when all is saidV
This little life of love and tearsW
Her age they say beside her bedV
To day is only fifteen yearsX
