Rose colourA
Rose Pink am I the colour gleams and glowsB
In many a flower her lips those tender doorsC
By which in time of love love's essence flowsB
From him to her are dyed in delicate RoseB
Mine is the earliest Ruby light that poursC
Out of the East when day's white gates uncloseC
-
On downy peach and maiden's downier cheekD
I in a flush of radiant bloom alightE
Clinging at sunset to the shimmering peakD
I veil its snow in floods of Roseate lightE
-
AzureA
Mine is the heavenly hue of Azure skiesC
Where the white clouds lie soft as seraphs' wingsC
Mine the sweet shadowed light in innocent eyesC
Whose lovely looks light only on lovely thingsC
-
Mine the Blue Distance delicate and clearA
Mine the Blue Glory of the morning seaC
All that the soul so longs for finds not hereA
Fond eyes deceive themselves and find in meC
-
ScarletF
Hail to the Royal Red of living BloodG
Let loose by steel in spirit freeing floodG
Forced from faint forms by toil or torture tornH
Staining the patient gates of life new bornH
-
Colour of War and Rage of Pomp and ShowI
Banners that flash red flags that flaunt and glowI
Colour of Carnage Glory also ShameJ
Raiment of women women may not nameJ
-
I hide in mines where unborn Rubies dwellK
Flicker and flare in fitful fire in HellK
The outpressed life blood of the grape is mineL
Hail to the Royal Purple Red of WineL
-
Strong am I over strong to eyes that tireA
In the hot hue of Rapine Riot FlameJ
Death and Despair are black War and DesireA
The two red cards in Life's unequal gameJ
-
GreenM
I am the Life of Forests and Wandering StreamsC
Green as the feathery reeds the Florican loveN
Young as a maiden who of her marriage dreamsC
Still sweetly inexperienced in ways of LoveN
-
Colour of Youth and Hope some waves are mineL
Some emerald reaches of the evening skyO
See in the Spring my sweet green Promise shineL
Never to be fulfilled of by and byO
-
Never to be fulfilled leaves bud and everA
Something is wanting something falls behindP
The flowered Solstice comes indeed but neverA
That light and lovely summer men divinedP
-
VioletP
I were the colour of Things if hue they hadP
That are hard to nameJ
Of curious twisted thoughts that men call madP
Or oftener shameJ
Of that delicate vice that is hardly viceC
So reticent rareA
Ethereal as the scent of buds and spiceC
In this Eastern airA
-
On palm fringed shores I colour the Cowrie shellK
With its edges curledP
And deep in Datura poison buds I dwellK
In a perfumed worldP
My lilac tinges the edge of the evening skyO
Where the sunset clingsC
My purple lends an Imperial MajestyP
To the robes of kingsC
-
YellowI
Gold am I and for me ever men curse and prayA
Selling their souls and each other by night and dayA
A sordid colour and yet I make some things fairA
Dying sunsets fields of corn and a maiden's hairA
-
Thus they discoursed in the daytime Violet Yellow and BlueQ
Emerald Scarlet and Rose colour the pink and perfect hueQ
Thus they spoke in the sunshine when their beauty was manifestP
Till the Night came and the Silence and gave them an equal restP
