Malaria Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKL MNMN OPOP QHQH

He lurks among the reeds beside the marshA
Red oleanders twisted in His hairB
His eyes are haggard and His lips are harshA
Upon His breast the bones show gaunt and bareB
-
The green and stagnant waters lick His feetC
And from their filmy iridescent scumD
Clouds of mosquitoes gauzy in the heatC
Rise with His gifts Death and DeliriumD
-
His messengers They bear the deadly taintE
On spangled wings aloft and far awayF
Making thin music strident and yet faintE
From golden eve to silver break of dayF
-
The baffled sleeper hears th' incessant whineG
Through his tormented dreams and finds no restH
The thirsty insects use his blood for wineG
Probe his blue veins and pasture on his breastH
-
While far away He in the marshes liesI
Staining the stagnant water with His breathJ
An endless hunger burning in His eyesI
A famine unassuaged whose food is DeathJ
-
He hides among the ghostly mists that floatK
Over the water weird and white and chillL
And peasants passing in their laden boatK
Shiver and feel a sense of coming illL
-
A thousand burn and die He takes no heedM
Their bones unburied strewn upon the plainN
Only increase the frenzy of His greedM
To add more victims to th' already slainN
-
He loves the haggard frame the shattered mindO
Gloats with delight upon the glazing eyeP
Yet in one thing His cruelty is kindO
He sends them lovely dreams before they dieP
-
Dreams that bestow on them their heart's desireQ
Visions that find them mad and leave them blestH
To sink forgetful of the fever's fireQ
Softly as in a lover's arms to restH
