Along the hot and endless roadA
Calm and erect with haggard eyesB
The prisoner bore his fetters' loadA
Beneath the scorching azure skiesB
-
Serene and tall with brows unbentA
Without a hope without a friendA
He under escort onward wentA
With death to meet him at the endA
-
The Poppy fields were pink and gayC
On either side and in the heatA
Their drowsy scent exhaled all dayC
A dream like fragrance almost sweetA
-
And when the cool of evening fellD
And tender colours touched the skyE
He still felt youth within him dwellD
And half forgot he had to dieE
-
Sometimes at night the Camp fires litA
And casting fitful light aroundA
His guard would friend like let him sitA
And talk awhile with them unboundA
-
Thus they the night before the lastA
Were resting when a group of girlsF
Across the small encampment passedA
With laughing lips and scented curlsF
-
Then in the Prisoner's weary eyesB
A sudden light lit up once moreG
The women saw him with surpriseB
And pity for the chains he boreG
-
For little women reck of CrimeH
If young and fair the criminal beI
Here in this tropic amorous climeH
Where love is still untamed and freeI
-
And one there was she walked less fastA
Behind the rest perhaps beguiledA
By his lithe form who as she passedA
Waited a little while and smiledA
-
The guard in kindly Eastern fashionJ
Smiled to themselves and let her stayC
So tolerant of human passionJ
To love he has but one more dayC
-
Yet when the soft and scented gloomH
Scarce lighted by the dying fireK
His arms caressed her youth and bloomH
With him it was not all desireK
-
For me he whispered as he layC
But little life remains to liveL
One thing I crave to take awayC
You have the gift but will you giveM
-
If I could know some child of mineN
Would live his life and see the sunJ
Across these fields of poppies shineN
What should I care that mine is doneJ
-
To die would not be dying quiteA
Leaving a little life behindA
You were you kind to me to nightA
Could grant me this but are you kindA
-
See I have something here for youO
For you and It if It there beI
Soft in the gloom her glances grewO
With gentle tears he could not seeI
-
He took the chain from off his neckP
Hid in the silver chain there layC
Three rubies without flaw or fleckP
She answered softly I will stayC
-
He drew her close the moonless skiesB
Shed little light the fire was deadA
Soft pity filled her youthful eyesB
And many tender things she saidA
-
Throughout the hot and silent nightA
All that he asked of her she gaveQ
And left alone ere morning lightA
He went serenely to the graveQ
-
Happy for even when the ropeR
Confined his neck his thoughts were freeI
And centered round his Secret HopeR
The little life that was to beI
-
When Poppies bloomed again she boreG
His child who gaily laughed and crowedA
While round his tiny neck he woreG
The rubies given on the roadA
-
For his small sake she wished to waitA
But vainly to forget she triedA
And grieving for the Prisoner's fateA
She broke her gentle heart and diedA
