Rhyme Scheme: ABAB AAAA CACA DEDE AAAA AFAF BGBG HIHI AAAA JCJC HKHK CLCM NJNJ AAAA OIOI PCPC BABA AQAQ RIRI GAGA AAAAAlong the hot and endless road | A |
Calm and erect with haggard eyes | B |
The prisoner bore his fetters' load | A |
Beneath the scorching azure skies | B |
- | |
Serene and tall with brows unbent | A |
Without a hope without a friend | A |
He under escort onward went | A |
With death to meet him at the end | A |
- | |
The Poppy fields were pink and gay | C |
On either side and in the heat | A |
Their drowsy scent exhaled all day | C |
A dream like fragrance almost sweet | A |
- | |
And when the cool of evening fell | D |
And tender colours touched the sky | E |
He still felt youth within him dwell | D |
And half forgot he had to die | E |
- | |
Sometimes at night the Camp fires lit | A |
And casting fitful light around | A |
His guard would friend like let him sit | A |
And talk awhile with them unbound | A |
- | |
Thus they the night before the last | A |
Were resting when a group of girls | F |
Across the small encampment passed | A |
With laughing lips and scented curls | F |
- | |
Then in the Prisoner's weary eyes | B |
A sudden light lit up once more | G |
The women saw him with surprise | B |
And pity for the chains he bore | G |
- | |
For little women reck of Crime | H |
If young and fair the criminal be | I |
Here in this tropic amorous clime | H |
Where love is still untamed and free | I |
- | |
And one there was she walked less fast | A |
Behind the rest perhaps beguiled | A |
By his lithe form who as she passed | A |
Waited a little while and smiled | A |
- | |
The guard in kindly Eastern fashion | J |
Smiled to themselves and let her stay | C |
So tolerant of human passion | J |
To love he has but one more day | C |
- | |
Yet when the soft and scented gloom | H |
Scarce lighted by the dying fire | K |
His arms caressed her youth and bloom | H |
With him it was not all desire | K |
- | |
For me he whispered as he lay | C |
But little life remains to live | L |
One thing I crave to take away | C |
You have the gift but will you give | M |
- | |
If I could know some child of mine | N |
Would live his life and see the sun | J |
Across these fields of poppies shine | N |
What should I care that mine is done | J |
- | |
To die would not be dying quite | A |
Leaving a little life behind | A |
You were you kind to me to night | A |
Could grant me this but are you kind | A |
- | |
See I have something here for you | O |
For you and It if It there be | I |
Soft in the gloom her glances grew | O |
With gentle tears he could not see | I |
- | |
He took the chain from off his neck | P |
Hid in the silver chain there lay | C |
Three rubies without flaw or fleck | P |
She answered softly I will stay | C |
- | |
He drew her close the moonless skies | B |
Shed little light the fire was dead | A |
Soft pity filled her youthful eyes | B |
And many tender things she said | A |
- | |
Throughout the hot and silent night | A |
All that he asked of her she gave | Q |
And left alone ere morning light | A |
He went serenely to the grave | Q |
- | |
Happy for even when the rope | R |
Confined his neck his thoughts were free | I |
And centered round his Secret Hope | R |
The little life that was to be | I |
- | |
When Poppies bloomed again she bore | G |
His child who gaily laughed and crowed | A |
While round his tiny neck he wore | G |
The rubies given on the road | A |
- | |
For his small sake she wished to wait | A |
But vainly to forget she tried | A |
And grieving for the Prisoner's fate | A |
She broke her gentle heart and died | A |
