Death and Famine on every sideA
And never a sign of rainB
The bones of those who have starved and diedA
Unburied upon the plainB
What care have I that the bones bleach whiteC
To morrow they may be mineD
But I shall sleep in your arms to nightC
And drink your lips like wineD
-
Cholera Riot and Sudden DeathE
And the brave red blood set freeF
The glazing eye and the failing breathE
But what are these things to meF
Your breath is quick and your eyes are brightC
And your blood is red like wineD
And I shall sleep in your arms to nightC
And hold your lips with mineD
-
I hear the sound of a thousand tearsG
Like softly pattering rainB
I see the fever folly and fearsH
Fulfilling man's tale of painB
But for the moment your star is brightC
I revel beneath its shineD
For I shall sleep in your arms to nightC
And feel your lips on mineD
-
And you need not deem me over coldI
That I do not stop to thinkJ
For all the pleasure this Life may holdI
Is on the Precipice brinkJ
Thought could but lessen my soul's delightC
And to day she may not pineD
For I shall lie in your arms to nightC
And close your lips with mineD
-
I trust what sorrow the Fates may sendK
I may carry quietly throughL
And pray for grace when I reach the endK
To die as a man should doL
To day at least must be clear and brightC
Without a sorrowful signD
Because I sleep in your arms to nightC
And feel your lips on mineD
-
So on I work in the blazing sunM
To bury what dead we mayN
But glad oh glad when the day is doneM
And the night falls round us greyN
Would those we covered away from sightC
Had a rest as sweet as mineD
For I shall sleep in your arms to nightC
And drink your lips like wineD
