Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FGHG IJIJ KLKL CMBM KNKN OPOP EQEQ RSRS TUTU RVRV WEWE XYXY ZA2ZA2 TB2TB2Oh come Beloved before my beauty fades | A |
Pity the sorrow of my loneliness | B |
I am a Rosebush that the Cypress shades | A |
No sunbeams find or lighten my distress | C |
- | |
Daily I watch the waning of my bloom | D |
Ah piteous fading of a thing so fair | E |
While Fate remorseless weaving at her loom | D |
Twines furtive silver in my twisted hair | E |
- | |
This noon I watched a tremulous fading rose | F |
Rise on the wind to court a butterfly | G |
One speck of pollen ere my petals close | H |
Bring me one touch of love before I die | G |
- | |
But the gay butterfly who had the power | I |
To grant refused flew far across the dell | J |
And as he fertilised a younger flower | I |
The petals of the rose defrauded fell | J |
- | |
Such was my fate thou hast not come to me | K |
Thine eyes are absent and thy voice is mute | L |
Though I am slim as this Papaya tree | K |
With breasts out pointing even as its fruit | L |
- | |
Beauty was mine it brought me no caress | C |
My lips were red yet there were none to taste | M |
I saw my youth consume in loneliness | B |
And all the fervour of my heart run waste | M |
- | |
While I still hoped that Thou would'st come to me | K |
I and the garden waited for their Lord | N |
Here He will rest beneath this Champa tree | K |
Hence all ye spike set grasses from the sward | N |
- | |
In this cool rillet I shall bathe His feet | O |
Come rounded pebbles from a smoother shore | P |
This is the honey that His lips will eat | O |
Hasten O bees enhance the amber store | P |
- | |
Ripen ye Custard Apples round and fair | E |
Practise your songs O Bulbuls on the bough | Q |
Surely some sweeter sweetness haunts the air | E |
Maybe His feet draw near us even now | Q |
- | |
Disperse ye fireflies clustered on the palm | R |
Love heeds no lamp he welcomes moonless skies | S |
Soon shall ye find O stars serene and calm | R |
Your sparkling rivals in my lover's eyes | S |
- | |
Closely I wove my leafy Jasmin bowers | T |
Hoping to hide my pleasure and my shame | U |
Where the Lantana's indecisive flowers | T |
Vary from palest rose to orange flame | U |
- | |
Ay there were lovely hours 'neath fern and palm | R |
Almost my aching longing I forgot | V |
White nights of silence noons of golden calm | R |
All past all wasted since Thou camest not | V |
- | |
Night after night the Champa trees distilled | W |
Their cruel sweetness on the careless air | E |
Noon after noon I watched the Bulbuls build | W |
And saw with hungry eyes the Sun birds pair | E |
- | |
None came and none will come no use to wait | X |
Youth's fragrance dies its tender light dies down | Y |
I will arise before it grows too late | X |
And seek the noisy brilliance of the town | Y |
- | |
These many waiting years I longed for gold | Z |
Now must I needs console me with alloy | A2 |
Before this beauty fades this pulse grows cold | Z |
I may not love I will at least enjoy | A2 |
- | |
Farewell my Solitude of scented flowers | T |
Across whose glades the emerald parrots gleam | B2 |
Haunt of false hope and home of wasted hours | T |
I am awake at last Guard thou the dream | B2 |
