Oh come Beloved before my beauty fadesA
Pity the sorrow of my lonelinessB
I am a Rosebush that the Cypress shadesA
No sunbeams find or lighten my distressC
-
Daily I watch the waning of my bloomD
Ah piteous fading of a thing so fairE
While Fate remorseless weaving at her loomD
Twines furtive silver in my twisted hairE
-
This noon I watched a tremulous fading roseF
Rise on the wind to court a butterflyG
One speck of pollen ere my petals closeH
Bring me one touch of love before I dieG
-
But the gay butterfly who had the powerI
To grant refused flew far across the dellJ
And as he fertilised a younger flowerI
The petals of the rose defrauded fellJ
-
Such was my fate thou hast not come to meK
Thine eyes are absent and thy voice is muteL
Though I am slim as this Papaya treeK
With breasts out pointing even as its fruitL
-
Beauty was mine it brought me no caressC
My lips were red yet there were none to tasteM
I saw my youth consume in lonelinessB
And all the fervour of my heart run wasteM
-
While I still hoped that Thou would'st come to meK
I and the garden waited for their LordN
Here He will rest beneath this Champa treeK
Hence all ye spike set grasses from the swardN
-
In this cool rillet I shall bathe His feetO
Come rounded pebbles from a smoother shoreP
This is the honey that His lips will eatO
Hasten O bees enhance the amber storeP
-
Ripen ye Custard Apples round and fairE
Practise your songs O Bulbuls on the boughQ
Surely some sweeter sweetness haunts the airE
Maybe His feet draw near us even nowQ
-
Disperse ye fireflies clustered on the palmR
Love heeds no lamp he welcomes moonless skiesS
Soon shall ye find O stars serene and calmR
Your sparkling rivals in my lover's eyesS
-
Closely I wove my leafy Jasmin bowersT
Hoping to hide my pleasure and my shameU
Where the Lantana's indecisive flowersT
Vary from palest rose to orange flameU
-
Ay there were lovely hours 'neath fern and palmR
Almost my aching longing I forgotV
White nights of silence noons of golden calmR
All past all wasted since Thou camest notV
-
Night after night the Champa trees distilledW
Their cruel sweetness on the careless airE
Noon after noon I watched the Bulbuls buildW
And saw with hungry eyes the Sun birds pairE
-
None came and none will come no use to waitX
Youth's fragrance dies its tender light dies downY
I will arise before it grows too lateX
And seek the noisy brilliance of the townY
-
These many waiting years I longed for goldZ
Now must I needs console me with alloyA2
Before this beauty fades this pulse grows coldZ
I may not love I will at least enjoyA2
-
Farewell my Solitude of scented flowersT
Across whose glades the emerald parrots gleamB2
Haunt of false hope and home of wasted hoursT
I am awake at last Guard thou the dreamB2
