We have left Gul Kach behind usA
Are marching on ApozaiA
Where pleasure and rest are waitingB
To welcome us by and byC
-
We're falling back from the GomalD
Across the Gir dao plainE
The camping ground is desertedF
We'll never come back againG
-
Along the rocks and the defilesA
The mules and the camels windH
Good bye to Rahimut UllahD
The man who is left behindH
-
For some we lost in the skirmishI
And some were killed in the fightJ
But he was captured by feverK
In the sentry pit at nightJ
-
A rifle shot had been swifterK
Less trouble a sabre thrustL
But his Fate decided feverK
And each man dies as he mustL
-
Behind us red in the distanceA
The wavering flames rise highC
The flames of our burning grass hutsA
Against the black of the skyC
-
We hear the sound of the riverK
An ever lessening moanM
The hearts of us all turn backwardsA
To where he is left aloneM
-
We sing up a little louderK
We know that we feel bereftN
We're leaving the camp togetherK
And only one of us leftN
-
The only one out of manyO
And each must come to his endP
I wish I could stop this singingB
He happened to be my friendP
-
We're falling back from the GomalD
We're marching on ApozaiA
And pleasure and rest are waitingB
To welcome us by and byC
-
Perhaps the feast will taste bitterK
The lips of the girls less kindH
Because of Rahimut UllahD
The man who is left behindH
