Since Oh Beloved you are not even faithfulA
To me who loved you so for one short nightB
For one brief space of darkness though my absenceC
Did but endure until the dawning lightB
-
Since all your beauty which was mine you squanderedD
On that which now lies dead across your doorE
See here this knife made keen and bright to kill youF
You shall not see the sun rise any moreE
-
Lie still Lie still In all the empty villageG
Who is there left to hear or heed your cryH
All are gone to labour in the valleyI
Who will return before your time to dieH
-
No use to struggle when I found you sleepingJ
I took your hands and bound them to your sideK
And both these slender feet too apt at strayingJ
Down to the cot on which you lie are tiedK
-
Lie still Beloved that dead thing lying yonderL
I hated and I killed but love is sweetM
And you are more than sweet to me who love youF
Who decked my eyes with dust from off your feetM
-
-
Give me your lips Ah lovely and disloyalA
Give me yourself again before you goN
Down through the darkness of the Great Blind PortalA
All of life's best and basest you must knowN
-
Erstwhile Beloved you were so young and fragileA
I held you gently as one holds a flowerL
But now God knows what use to still be tenderL
To one whose life is done within an hourL
-
I hurt What then Death will not hurt you dearestO
As you hurt me for just a single nightB
You call me cruel who laid my life in ruinsP
To gain one little moment of delightB
-
Look up look out across the open doorwayQ
The sunlight streams The distant hills are blueF
Look at the pale pink peach trees in our gardenR
Sweet fruit will come of them but not for youF
-
The fair far snow upon those jagged mountainsP
That gnaw against the hard blue Afghan skyH
Will soon descend set free by summer sunshineS
You will not see those torrents sweeping byH
-
The world is not for you From this day forwardD
You must lie still alone who would not lieH
Alone for one night only though returningJ
I was when earliest dawn should break the skyH
-
There lies my lute and many strings are brokenR
Some one was playing it and some one toreE
The silken tassels round my Hookah wovenR
Some one who plays and smokes and loves no moreE
-
Some one who took last night his fill of pleasureL
As I took mine at dawn The knife went homeT
Straight through his heart God only knows my raptureL
Bathing my chill hands in the warm red foamT
-
And so I pain you This is only lovingJ
Wait till I kill you Ah this soft curled hairU
Surely the fault was mine to love and leave youF
Even a single night you are so fairU
-
Cold steel is very cooling to the fervourU
Of over passionate ones Beloved like youF
Nay turn your lips to mine Not quite unlovelyH
They are as yet as yet though quite untrueF
-
What will your brother say to night returningJ
With laden camels homewards to the hillsV
Finding you dead and me asleep beside youF
Will he awake me first before he killsV
-
For I shall sleep Here on the cot beside youF
When you my Heart's Delight are cold in deathW
When your young heart and restless lips are silentX
Grown chilly even beneath my burning breathW
-
When I have slowly drawn my knife across youF
Taking my pleasure as I see you swoonY
I shall sleep sound worn out by love's last fervourF
And then God grant your kinsmen kill me soonY
