The trees went up the hillA
And over itB
Then the dry grasses of the pasture wereC
Only a kind of blonde lightD
Settling everywhereE
And framing the randomly strewnF
Outcropping of gray stoneG
-
That anchored them to soilH
-
Who were theyI
One in the picture amp one not amp bothJ
Scotch Irish driftersK
With nothing in common but a perfect contemptL
for a pastM
Ancestors of stumps amp fallen trees ampN
One sits on a sorrel mareE
Idly tossing small stones at the rumpO
of a steerP
That goes on grazing at tough rosettesQ
of pasture grass amp switching its tailR
In what is not yet irritationS
-
What I like what IT
-
Have always liked is the way he tosses each smallU
Stone without thinking withoutV
A thought for anything not aiming at allU
The easy arcing forearm nonchalanceW
Like someone fly castingX
For this is whatY
He wantedZ
To be among the stones the grassesA2
Savoring a stony selfB2
That reminded him of no one elseC2
And on land where that poacher LawD2
Had not yet stolen through his fencesA2
The horse beneath him tensingX
Its withers lightly to keepE2
-
The summer flies awayI
-
And the woman in the flower print dress hemmedF2
With stainsG2
A half mile offH2
Is the authoress of no more than smoke risingX
Her sole diary amp only publicationS
From a distant chimneyI2
They have perhaps a year or twoJ2
Left of thisK2
Before history begins to edit them intoJ2
Something without smoke or flies somethingX
Beyond all recognitionS
