| And this evening in the garden | H |
| I find the winter | I |
| inside a snail shell rigid and | J |
| cool a little stubborn temple | C |
| its one visitor gone | K |

| If there were messages or signs | L |
| I might hear now a voice tell me | M |
| to walk forever to ask | N |
| the mold for pardon and one | H |
| by one I would hear out my sins | O |
| hear they are not important that I am | P |
| part of this rain | Q |
| drumming its long fingers and | J |
| of the roadside stone refusing | R |
| to blink and of the coyote | M |
| nailed to the fence with its | S |
| long grin | T |

| And when there are no messages | U |
| the dead lie still | V |
| their hands crossed so strangely | M |
| like knives and forks after supper | I |

| I stay up late listening | R |
| My feet tap the floor | W |
| they begin a tiny dance | X |
| which will outlive me | M |
| They turn away from this poem | Y |
| It is almost Spring | R |
