Fish Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EFGH IJKL MINO PQPR STUV WXYZ A2FG B2IC2D2 E2QCF2

The cop holds me up like a fishA
he feels the huge bonesB
surrounding my eyesC
and he runs a thumb under themD
-
lifting my eyelidsE
as if they wereF
envelopes filled with the nightG
Now he turnsH
-
my head back and forth gentlyI
until I'm so tame and stillJ
I could be a tiny plasticK
skull left on theL
-
dashboard of a junked carM
By now he's so sure of meI
he chews gumN
and drops his flashlight to his sideO
-
he could be cleaning a troutP
while the pines rise into the darknessQ
though tonight troutP
are freezing into bits of starsR
-
-
under the ice When he lets me goS
I feel numb I feel likeT
a fish burned by his touch and turnU
and slip into the coldV
-
night rippling with neonsW
and the razor bladesX
of the poorY
and the torn mouths on postersZ
-
Once I thought even through thisA2
I could go quietly as a star turning over and overF
in the deep truce of its lightG
-
Now I mustB2
go on repeating the last filthyI
words on the lipsC2
of this shunken headD2
-
shining out of its death in the moonE2
until trout surfaceQ
with their petrified round eyesC
and the stars begin movingF2
