Rhyme Scheme: ABCDCEFEA GHGH II IJIJKLKL MKMK NN NONOPQPQ RGRG KKA | |
I saw Time flowing like a hundred yachts | B |
That fly behind the daylight foxed with air | C |
Or piercing like the quince bright bitter slats | D |
Of sun gone thrusting under Harbour's hair | C |
So Time the wave enfolds me in its bed | E |
Or Time the bony knife it runs me through | F |
'Skulker take heart ' I thought my own heart said | E |
'The flood the blade go by Time flows not you ' | A |
- | |
Vilely continuously stupidly | G |
Time takes me drills me drives through bone and vein | H |
So water bends the seaweeds in the sea | G |
The tide goes over but the weeds remain | H |
- | |
Time you must cry farewell take up the track | I |
And leave this lovely moment at your back | I |
- | |
II | - |
- | |
Time leaves the lovely moment at his back | I |
Eager to quench and ripen kiss or kill | J |
To morrow begs him breathless for his lack | I |
Or beauty dead entreats him to be still | J |
His fate pursues him he must open doors | K |
Or close them for that pale and faceless host | L |
Without a flag whose agony implores | K |
Birth to be flesh or funeral to be ghost | L |
- | |
Out of all reckoning out of dark and light | M |
Over the edges of dead Nows and Heres | K |
Blindly and softly as a mistress might | M |
He keeps appointments with a million years | K |
- | |
I and the moment laugh and let him go | N |
Leaning against his golden undertow | N |
- | |
III | - |
- | |
Leaning against the golden undertow | N |
Backward I saw the birds begin to climb | O |
with bodies hailstone clear and shadows flow | N |
Fixed in a sweet meniscus out of Time | O |
Out of the torrent like the fainter land | P |
Lensed in a bubble's ghostly camera | Q |
The lighted beach the sharp and china sand | P |
Glitters and waters and peninsula | Q |
- | |
The moment's world it was and I was part | R |
Fleshless and ageless changeless and made free | G |
'Fool would you leave this country ' cried my heart | R |
But I was taken by the suck of sea | G |
- | |
The gulls go down the body dies and rots | K |
And Time flows past them like a hundred yachts | K |
