Troop Train Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFEG HIJHHKLH HMHMHHHN OHFFFHPF HQQRHSQE

It stops the town we come through Workers raiseA
Their oily arms in good salute and grinB
Kids scream as at a circus Business menC
Glance hopefully and go their measured wayD
And women standing at their dumbstruck doorE
More slowly wave and seem to warn us backF
As if a tear blinding the course of warE
Might once dissolve our iron in their sweet wishG

-
Fruit of the world O clustered on ourselvesH
We hang as from a cornucopiaI
In total friendliness with faces bunchedJ
To spray the streets with catcalls and with leersH
A bottle smashes on the moving tiesH
And eyes fixed on a lady smiling pinkK
Stretch like a rubber band and snap and stingL
The mouth that wants the drink of water kissH
-
-
And on through crummy continents and daysH
Deliberate grimy slightly drunk we crawlM
The good bad boys of circumstance and chanceH
Whose bucket helmets bang the empty wallM
Where twist the murdered bodies of our packsH
Next to the guns that only seem themselvesH
And distance like a strap adjusted shrinksH
Tightens across the shoulder and holds firmN
-
-
Here is a deck of cards out of this handO
Dealer deal me my luck a pair of bullsH
The right draw to a flush the one eyed jackF
Diamonds and hearts are red but spades are blackF
And spades are spades and clubs are clovers blackF
But deal me winners souvenirs of peaceH
This stands to reason and arithmeticP
Luck also travels and not all come backF
-
-
Trains lead to ships and ships to death or trainsH
And trains to death or trucks and trucks to deathQ
Or trucks lead to the march the march to deathQ
Or that survival which is all our hopeR
And death leads back to trucks and trains and shipsH
But life leads to the march O flag at lastS
The place of life found after trains and deathQ
Nightfall of nations brilliant after warE
