Karl Shapiro Books, Karl Shapiro poetry book A Commentary on Pindar Nemean Nine Authors: Bruce Karl Braswell
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
Published Date: 1998-01-01
Categories: Biography & Autobiography
Examines the second of two odes the classical Greek poet wrote for the Sicilian soldier and statesman Chromios of Aitna. A self-contained commentary, but also a complement to Braswell's earlier commentary on the first, Nemean One. Provides a more extensive and detailed treatment of Nemean Nine because of its relative neglect by critics. Primarily intended to provide the exegesis and critical comment required to understand the ode as a work of linguistic and literary art situated in its historical context. However, also addresses more general issues relating to Pindar's usage. The Greek text here differs at twelve points from the standards of Snell-Maehler and Tyryn, based on a fresh inspection of the primary manuscripts. Bliss Carman and Richard Hovey Poem
In A Copy Of Browning
by Bliss Carman and Richard Hovey

Browning, old fellow,
Your leaves grow yellow,
Beginning to mellow
As seasons pass.
Your cover is wrinkled,
And stained and sprinkled,
And warped and crinkled
From sleep on the grass.
