The Conscientious Objector Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFBD GHIJKILI MNOMPKIP HBQBIRII

The gates clanged and they walked you into jailA
More tense than felons but relieved to findB
The hostile world shut out the flags that drippedC
From every mother s windowpane obsceneD
The bloodlust sweating from the public heartE
The dog authority slavering at your throatF
A sense of quiet of pulling down the blindB
Possessed you Punishment you felt was cleanD
-
-
The decks the catwalks and the narrow lightG
Composed a ship This was a mutinous crewH
Troubling the captains for plain decenciesI
A Mayflower brim with pilgrims headed outJ
To establish new theocracies to westK
A Noah s ark coasting the topmost seasI
Ten miles above the sodomites and fishL
These inmates loved the only living dovesI
-
-
Like all men hunted from the world you madeM
A good community voyaging the stormN
To no safe Plymouth or green AraratO
Trouble or calm the men with Bibles prayedM
The gaunt politicals construed our hateP
The opposite of all armies you were bestK
Opposing uniformity and yourselvesI
Prison and personality were your fateP
-
-
You suffered not so physically but knewH
Maltreatment hunger ennui of the mindB
Well might the soldier kissing the hot beachQ
Erupting in his face damn all your kindB
Yet you who saved neither yourselves nor usI
Are equally with those who shed the bloodR
The heroes of our cause Your conscience isI
What we come back to in the armisticeI
