The Alphabet Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCABCDEFDEF GHIGHIJKLJKHL

The letters of the Jews as strict as flamesA
Or little terrible flowers leanB
Stubbornly upwards through the perfect agesC
Singing through solid stone the sacred namesA
The letters of the Jews are black and cleanB
And lie in chain line over Christian pagesC
The chosen letters bristle like barbed wireD
That hedge the flesh of manE
Twisting and tightening the book that warnsF
These words this burning bush this flickering pyreD
Unsacrifices the bled son of manE
Yet plaits his crown of thornsF

Where go the tipsy idols of the RomanG
Past synagogues of patient timeH
Where go the sisters of the Gothic roseI
Where go the blue eyes of the Polish womenG
Past the almost natural crimeH
Past the still speaking embers of ghettosI
There rise the tinder flowers of the JewsJ
The letters of the Jews are dancing knivesK
That carve the heart of darkness seven waysL
These are the letters that all men refuseJ
And will refuse until the king arrivesK
And will refuse until the death of timeH
And all is rolled back in the book of daysL
