the mainA
Dear dear I've been thrice broken heartedB
And thrice but ah let me refrainA
-
There was not a lassie in PlessyC
Nay truly there was not a ladD
That morning you left us all BessyC
But dropped a kind tear and look's sadD
-
A week ere ye went ye were marriedE
Yes yes I remember arightE
The lads and the lasses all hurriedE
To dance at your bridals that nightE
-
With others were Mary from HortonF
And Harry from over the fieldsG
Your prim cousin Peggy from ChirtonF
And diddler Allen from ShieldsG
-
Piper Tom with his pipes in the cornerH
Did pipe till the red morn a brokeI
And we danced and we sung in our turn orJ
Gave vent to our glee in a jokeI
-
That seems but last night tho' elevenF
Black winters have flown since and yetE
Ye're bright as yon star in the heavenF
Whilst I but I winnot regretE
-
Ye're just bright and fresh and as rosyC
As when ye last left us all justE
Whilst I am a poor wither'd posyC
The passer has strampt in the dustE
-
This was not so always no clearlyC
When lasses the burnie has shownF
The rose on your dimpled cheek nearlyC
Out matched by the rose on my ownF
-
Twinn'd sisters appeared we and cannyC
Together we'd link o'er the woldE
When Bessy's bit secrets to NannyC
And Nanny's to Bessy were toldE
-
Nay's one we grew up until HarryC
Was mine but was mine for how longK
Then the changes that followed the worryC
The guilt and the shame and the wrongK
-
Ye knew my 'curst bane and besetterC
Brown Piers with the thievish black e'eC
He danced at your wedding and betterC
Than any but Harry danced heC
-
The sight sent the lasses a skarlingK
Whenever he came into viewL
And many a fond mother's darlingK
Has lived his deception to rueL
-
Meg Wilson a down the green loaningK
Skipped with him a fine afternoonF
When last she went there she was moaningK
Her heart like a harp out of tuneF
-
Even Cary the dour looking donnetE
Who'd looked on my downfall with scornF
Was smit with his blink and her bonnetE
One Monday was found in the cornF
-
Nay many with him tripped and tumbledE
As I'd tripped and tumbled what thenF
Not one by her fall was so humbledE
Or put to one half of my painF
-
When Harry was brought on a barrowC
A corpse from the pit had I knownF
But Brown who had long been his marrowC
Then who was so kind as Piers BrownF
-
He showed himself ready and willingK
To lighten the load I enduredE
He gather'd me many a shillingK
And whatso I needed procuredE
-
The bones of my Harry right dulyC
Were laid in the grave by his aidE
Then slipt he to see me too trulyC
So slipt till my pride was low laidE
-
There's many to point and to titterC
At one who has happen'd a fallM
And into the cup that is bitterC
The petty still empty their gallM
-
There's many to point and to titterC
At one that has happened to fallM
And into my potion so bitterC
The petty so emptied their gallM
-
Then mine was a hardship and troubleN
When touch'd by deceit's magic maceC
My pride went away like a bubbleN
Then mine was a pitiful caseC
-
Then deep on my cheek burn'd the scarletE
The token of sin and of shameO
And many did call me a harlotE
More worthy than I of the nameO
-
Then mishap to mishap like billowC
To billow succeeded and IP
Was laid with my head on my pillowC
And no one to solace me nighP
-
Then perished the darlings you kindlyC
Remember and ask for alornF
I lay by the morsels and blindlyC
Then cursed the dark hour I was bornF
-
A lorn by the dead lay I drivenF
To frenzy by grief shame and scornF
And lifted my two hands to heavenF
Then cursed the dark hour I was bornF
-
I cursed felt accursed nay that hourlyC
I'd dogged by a black devil beenF
And he when he'd speeded most surelyC
Had held in derision my teenF
-
He'd dazzled and led me to yamourC
For baubles one ought to despiseC
Then whipt from my vision the glamourC
And shown the sad truth to my eyesC
-
He'd mounted the air and a snellingK
Bleak blast had swept valley and plainF
And the dwelling of joy made the dwellingK
Of dire desolation and painF
-
Years long the keen thought of the cruelN
Black lot of thy crony a ledE
Her to feel and to prate thus and jewelN
Yet puts a mill wheel in her headE
-
The pale morning finds me a wringingK
My hands for the decries in vainF
The day passes by without bringingK
Me any relief to my painF
-
Evermore on my heart feeds the cankerC
The cruel reflection that ayQ
That they for a morsel did hankerC
I had not a penny to buyP
-
Overcome by despair in confusionF
Of mind I will wander oft whenF
The prey of a charming delusionF
They seem to me living againF
-
Again on their hazels a prancingK
They hie as they hied o'er the wayQ
The midges above them a dancingK
Are not half so merry as theyQ
-
Again up and down the ball boundethQ
A tween their bit hands and the earthQ
Till rapture their senses confoundethQ
And laughter gives vent to their mirthQ
-
Again in my sight my woe banishedE
The birds seem a living againF
Then quickly I find them a vanishedE
And sorrow yet with me and painF
-
While yet but a lassie I marriedE
While yet in my teens I was leftE
Ere olden to frenzy was harriedE
Ere olden of hope I'm a reftE
-
A reed by the wild wind a brokenF
Am I and my tongue in vain seeksC
To utter the tale which a spokenF
Would hurry that rose from your cheeksC
-
But let me refrain Since we partedE
Ah lass since ye went o'er the mainF
Since then I've been thrice broken heartedE
And thrice but ah let me refrainF
