In Memoriam Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDDBEEEBDF CGCGDDGHHIJIJKKJLLLM NNNJDD O

A gentle loving thoughtful boyA
But happy gay and brightB
A gleam of sunshine from the skyC
That filled a home with lightB
And whether busied with his playD
Throughout the passing summer dayD
Or sleepless in the nightB
A simple song by children sungE
For ever in his memory rungE
Found gleeful utterance from his tongueE
And filled him with delightB
'Jesus loves me He will stayD
Close beside me all the way 'F
-
But now across the morning skyC
The shade of night has rolledG
Lay all his little playthings byC
His hands are still and coldG
His loving eyes once bright as dayD
Are turning to their former clayD
No more the tale is toldG
The soul has left that pulseless breastH
For regions of eternal restH
Ay but to die a child aloneI
Without a guard or guideJ
To launch into the vast unknownI
Where shapeless phantoms glideJ
To cross the gulf no bridge can spanK
To realms unseen by living manK
All strange and yet untriedJ
With no familiar loved one nearL
To charm away his childish fearL
And give him one soft word of cheerL
To break the dreary voidM
Alas conjecture seems to swimN
And reason waxes faint and dimN
But faith affirms 'tis well with himN
Whatever may betideJ
Jesus loves him He will stayD
Close beside him all the wayD
