A sincere man am IA
From the land where palm trees growB
And I want before I dieA
My soul's verses to bestowB
-
I'm a traveller to all partsC
And a newcomer to noneD
I am art among the artsC
With the mountains I am oneD
-
I know how to name and classE
All the strange flowers that growB
I know every blade of grassE
Fatal lie and sublime woeB
-
I have seen through dead of nightF
Upon my head softly fallG
Rays formed of the purest lightF
From beauty celestialH
-
I have seen wings that were surgingI
From beautiful women's shouldersJ
And seen butterflies emergingI
From the refuse heap that mouldersJ
-
I have known a man to liveK
With a dagger at his sideL
And never once the name giveM
Of she by whose hand he diedL
-
Twice for an instant did IA
My soul's reflection espyN
Twice when my poor father diedL
And when she bade me good byeA
-
I trembled once when I flungO
The vineyard gate and to my dreadP
The wicked hornet had stungO
My little girl on the foreheadP
-
I rejoiced once and felt luckyN
The day that my jailer cameQ
To read the death warrant to meN
That bore his tears and my nameQ
-
I hear a sigh across the earthR
I hear a sigh over the deepS
It is no sign reaching my hearthT
But my son waking from sleepS
-
If they say I have obtainedU
The pick of the jeweller's troveV
A good friend is what I've gainedU
And I have put aside loveW
-
I have seen across the skiesJ
A wounded eagle still flyingI
I know the cubby where liesJ
The snake of its venom dyingI
-
I know that the world is weakX
And must soon fall to the groundY
Then the gentle brook will speakX
Above the quiet profoundY
-
While trembling with joy and dreadP
I have touched with hand so boldZ
A once bright star that fell deadP
From heaven at my thresholdZ
-
On my brave heart is engravedA2
The sorrow hidden from all eyesJ
The son of a land enslavedA2
Lives for it suffers and diesJ
-
All is beautiful and rightF
All is as music and reasonD
And all like diamonds is lightF
That was coal before its seasonD
-
I know when fools are laid to restB2
Honor and tears will aboundY
And that of all fruits the bestB2
Is left to rot in holy groundY
-
Without a word the pompous museJ
I've set aside and understoodC2
From a withered branch I chooseJ
To hang my doctoral hoodC2
