The lamp that stands beside the cribA
Is not yet lighted to warm the gloomB
Of the blueish opaque light fallingC
Through the curtains of late afternoonD
-
From outside come unfamiliar soundsE
And weary children interrupt their playF
While in every corner of the houseG
Fairies awaken at the end of dayF
-
Shadows gathering among the drapesH
Rustle and murmur to childish earsI
And from the pages of their storybooksJ
Come all their favorite charactersK
-
First industrious Rin Rin RenacuajoL
And Mouse P rez scurrying to surviveM
Then casting even deeper shadowsN
Blue Beard who killed his seven wivesO
-
Given life in darkest cornersK
Somewhere in a distant woodP
Puss in Boots strides through the meadowsN
And the Wolf stalks Little Red RidinghoodP
-
In a deep dark forest echoingC
With chilling howls the handsome PrinceQ
On his white charger rides towardP
Sleeping Beauty who awaits his kissR
-
The children s voices silver and pureS
Form a chorus that speaks as oneT
Then they went to the ball and leftP
Poor Cinderella all aloneU
-
She wiped away her flowing tearsV
And scrubbed the kitchen pots and bowlsW
Watching the dance leaping amongX
Somber shadows and glowing coalsW
-
But her fairy godmother soon appearedP
With a beauteous gown and in a thriceY
From a pumpkin produced a golden coachZ
With prancing steeds once six white miceY
-
She gave Cinderella a lush bouquetP
And a glass slipper she quickly donnedP
She turned ashes to flashing jewelsA2
With one wave of her magic wandP
-
Abandoned dolls tossed on the carpetP
The listening girls sit in thrallB2
The light grows pale and dark creeps inC2
As lowering evening shadows fallB2
-
Wondrous stories of fairies and spritesA2
Are alive with ideas and fantasiesA2
They open to childish imaginationsA2
A whole world of possibilitiesA2
-
Stories born of times long goneD2
Wing through the dark of agesA2
From powerful early Aryan tribesA2
To diminished future racesA2
-
These stories are told by nanniesA2
When children can t get to sleepE2
The essence of poetic dreamF2
Is the mystery they keepE2
-
These stories have proved more lastingC
Than tomes of the philosophersA2
And with every generationT
Have entertained our ancestorsA2
-
O tales of elves and ghosts and fairiesA2
That people the dreams all children haveG2
Time buries you forever in our soulH2
And man evokes you with his loveI2
