These recollections with the scent of fernsA
Are the idyll of early yearsB
Gregorio Gutierrez Gonz lezB
-
Accompanying the hazy memoriesB
Time so generously glorifiesB
Returning to a welcoming heartC
And flocking like white butterfliesB
Come fantasies of happy childhood daysB
-
Blue Beard Little Red RidinghoodC
Lilliputians and the giant GulliverD
All of you floating in the mist of dreamsB
Spread your wings flyE
So I the happy journeyerD
Through storybooks may summon youF
To join with other beloved charactersB
-
O blessed youth Eyes aglimmerD
With dawning discoveryD
Follow the weary teacher s handC
Across the big red figuresB
In the tattered primerD
Where traces of vague recognitionG
Rewarding periods of youthful despondencyD
Beneath indifferent shadowsB
Begin forming letters into wordsB
-
On a dewy whiteC
Luminous restless August morningH
Helping a blazing sun riseB
On wings of the breezeB
Toward skies dotted with drifting cloudsB
Listening to a grandmother sB
Exemplary fairy talesB
Skipping schoolI
To organize a clamorous battleJ
In which rocks rattle like bulletsB
And a rumpled kerchief becomes a flagK
Constructing a manger sceneL
Of materials gathered from the woodsB
Then after the long rowdy outingH
Arranging the grassesB
Coral twigs and treasured mossesB
And on strange and alien landscapesB
Perspectives never seen or dreamedC
Creating roads of golden sandC
And waterfalls of gleaming tinselJ
-
Positioning the Wise Men on the hillM
And overheadC
The star that led them from afarD
In the crib the laughing Baby JesusB
In his bed ofN
Softest mosses and leafy fernsB
-
Pristine soul blush pink cheeksB
Skin like ermine on the snowO
Flaxen curlsB
Sparkling yet peaceful eyes how fairD
In memory the innocent babeP
-
Childhood hallowed valleyD
Of blessed calm and coolnessB
Where rays that will later blast our daysB
So softly shineQ
How saintly your pure innocenceB
How fleeting your brief happinessB
How sweet in hours of bitternessB
To turn back to the pastC
And call upon those memoriesB
