Out of the earth to rest or rangeA
Perpetual in perpetual changeA
The unknown passing through the strangeA
-
Water and saltness held togetherB
To tread the dust and stand the weatherB
And plough the field and stretch the tetherB
-
To pass the wine cup and be wittyC
Water the sands and build the cityC
Slaughter like devils and have pityC
-
Be red with rage and pale with lustD
Make beauty come make peace make trustD
Water and saltness mixed with dustD
-
Drive over earth swim under seaC
Fly in the eagle's secrecyC
Guess where the hidden comets beC
-
Know all the deathy seeds that stillE
Queen Helen's beauty Caesar's willE
And slay them even as they killE
-
Fashion an altar for a roodF
Defile a continent with bloodG
And watch a brother starve for foodF
-
Love like a madman shaking blindH
Till self is burnt into a kindH
Possession of another mindH
-
Brood upon beauty till the graceI
Of beauty with the holy faceI
Brings peace into the bitter placeI
-
Prove in the lifeless granites scanJ
The stars for hope for guide for planJ
Live as a woman or a manJ
-
Fasten to lover or to friendK
Until the heart break at the endK
The break of death that cannot mendK
-
Then to lie useless helpless stillE
Down in the earth in dark to fillE
The roots of grass or daffodilE
-
Down in the earth in dark aloneL
A mockery of the ghost in boneL
The strangeness passing the unknownL
-
Time will go by that outlasts clocksM
Dawn in the thorps will rouse the cocksM
Sunset be glory on the rocksM
-
But it the thing will never heedN
Even the rootling from the seedN
Thrusting to suck it for its needN
-
Since moons decay and suns declineO
How else should end this life of mineO
Water and saltness are not wineO
-
But in the darkest hour of nightP
When even the foxes peer for sightP
The byre cock crows he feels the lightP
-
So in this water mixed with dustD
The byre cock spirit crows from trustD
That death will change because it mustD
-
For all things change the darkness changesQ
The wandering spirits change their rangesQ
The corn is gathered to the grangesR
-
The corn is sown again it growsS
The stars burn out the darkness goesS
The rhythms change they do not closeT
-
They change and we who pass like foamU
Like dust blown through the streets of RomeU
Change ever too we have no homeU
-
Only a beauty only a powerB
Sad in the fruit bright in the flowerB
Endlessly erring for its hourB
-
But gathering as we stray a senseV
Of Life so lovely and intenseV
It lingers when we wander henceV
-
That those who follow feel behindH
Their backs when all before is blindH
Our joy a rampart to the mindH
