The Nepean Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBB CDCD DEDE FGFG HIHI DDDD JKJK

Far down the reach a creeping mistA
Hung dim along the mountain sideB
On shadowed water sleek and whistB
I let the lazy shallop glideB
-
The ripple scarcely cut the greenC
That edged the central path of greyD
I drew the oars and all unseenC
Gave reverent greeting to the dayD
-
Naked I stood with arms outspreadD
That opened wide the gates of dreamE
Then breathless bent my wondering headD
And sprang to meet the silent streamE
-
I slid and floated like a sealF
And bade my senses revel freeG
From cheek to footsole I could feelF
Her soft cool hands caressing meG
-
A noise of tiny wavelets wokeH
I quenched my drouth with delicate sipsI
And as I drank the surface brokeH
In eager kisses on my lipsI
-
The scented breath of morning turnedD
To incense as toward the westD
At last rock altar'd I discernedD
The sunshine on the mountain crestD
-
That light of blessing from the skyJ
Made us the fuel of its blazeK
And fragrant bush and stream and IJ
Were one aspiring cry of praiseK
