John Le Gay Brereton Books, John Le Gay Brereton poetry book The Selected Plays of John Marston Authors: John Marston, Principal Lecturer in the Department of Law John Marston
Publisher: CUP Archive
Published Date: 1986-08-29
Categories: Drama
This edition brings five of Marston's most interesting plays together in a readable and helpful form. They are collected with modern spelling, full commentaries, textual notes and introductions, in texts newly edited from the original quartos. A survey of criticism of Marston is included. The edition of Sophonisba (a play highly praised by T. S. Eliot) is the first modernised text to appear in one hundred years. Another textual innovation is the relegation to an appendix of Webster's obtrusive additions to The Malcontent. Marston's plays have enjoyed popular revivals in English theatres over the last decade, and the authors' commentary is designed to alert readers to theatrical effects. The playwright's language is elucidated here far more fully than in any other collection.

At the same time, Indigenous writing has come into its own, with authors such as Oodgeroo Noonuccal giving a powerful voice to the Aboriginal experience. Australia's Writers and Poets looks at the men and women who have created this rich literary tradition and celebrates the incredible diversity of their writing. This Little Red Book gives a terrific background to Australian writing, surprises with its stories, and says a lot about what it is to be Australian.

Browning, old fellow,
Your leaves grow yellow,
Beginning to mellow

Your cover is wrinkled,
And stained and sprinkled,
And warped and crinkled
From sleep on the grass.
