In shade where sunlight glances through | B |
And sweeping lightly from the tree | A |
Melts indolently in the blue | B |
- | |
The scanty grass blades yonder shake | C |
A tremulous flurry takes the smoke | D |
And ancient memories start awake | C |
At pungent scent of fig and oak | D |
- | |
For here of old an urchin strayed | E |
And gloomed in lonely pride the while | F |
An outlaw in a forest glade | E |
Or pirate on a tropic isle | F |
- | |
Here where a staid policeman strolls | G |
Ned Kelly in his armour stood | H |
And underneath the roadway rolls | G |
The river of the Haunted Wood | H |
- | |
And yonder couched in phantom fern | I |
Not far from Nelson's rolling ship | J |
I spied the antler'd head of Herne | I |

The gold dust spilled about the ground | R |
Made common dirt a treasure rare | S |
And if you fingered it you found | R |
The flashing jewels buried there | S |
- | |
The seabird sweeping free and far | T |
On wings of wonder will not see | A |
That green isle and its coral bar | T |
That corsair and his mystery | A |
- | |
As when a lump of sugar shrinks | U |
When coffee waves about it glide | V |
Crumbles and topples melts and sinks | U |
And mingles with the sombre tide | V |
- | |
So is the islet vanished yet | W |
As now I gulp a bitter draught | X |
The sweetness lingers Up and set | W |
The canvas of the rakish craft | X |
