Rhyme Scheme: AABCCB DDEFFE GGHIIH JKLJLK MNJMJJ JOJJJO GPGPQLQLL RSRSTUTUVFrom every quarter we | A |
Who bent the trembling knee | A |
And cowered or grovelled prostrate day and night | B |
Now come once more to sing | C |
A dirge before thee King | C |
Once more with earnest heart to do thee right | B |
- | |
Have we not hailed thee God | D |
Our weary feet have trod | D |
The vasty barren sands and treacherous ice | E |
With many a bitter cry | F |
To pile thine altar high | F |
With pallid human hearts in sacrifice | E |
- | |
We hated thee and came | G |
With eyes of shifty shame | G |
With heavy steel above the craven breast | H |
Yet evermore we did | I |
The ill thy servants bid | I |
For everywhere thy might was manifest | H |
- | |
At thy sibilant word | J |
We were filled with distrust | K |
And we glared on each other | L |
All horribly stirred | J |
Against sister and brother | L |
Our green hopes were wilted and riven our red running blood was as dust | K |
- | |
And a foul poison ran | M |
Through the veins of the world | N |
And we waited and wondered | J |
By magical ban | M |
We were cruelly sundered | J |
Then a maniac hatred upcaught us and deep into hell we were hurled | J |
- | |
We have crept to thee God | J |
In the day of thy wrath | O |
We have wept we have fasted | J |
We have crimsoned the sod | J |
That thy worship has blasted | J |
And have seen thee stalk pale and triumphant where nations fell flat in thy path | O |
- | |
Yet out of the dust and the flame | G |
The squalor and muddle of crime | P |
A red waving blossom there came | G |
And a scent on the tempest of time | P |
Heroic and splendid we threw | Q |
Our lives to be oil in the fire | L |
But a marvel of fellowship grew | Q |
As the blaze bickered broader and higher | L |
And the soul of a people stood up and spoke to us all from the pyre | L |
- | |
And lo we are come to thy shrine | R |
O God but we ask for no grace | S |
For our hearts are made glad with a wine | R |
That is death to the craven and base | S |
And thy shrine shall be burnt for our mirth | T |
And thine altar be turned to thy bier | U |
For if Love be our Lord upon earth | T |
What corner is left for thee here | U |
The veil of thy temple is rent and behold thou hast vanished O Fear | V |
