To The Ring Nebula Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDD EFEFGGG HIHIJJJ KLKLMMM BNBOPPP

O pallid spectre of the midnight skiesA
Whose phantom features in the dome of NightB
Elude the keenest gaze of wistful eyesA
Till amplest lenses aid the failing sightB
On heaven's blue sea the farthest isle of fireC
From thee whose glories it would fain admireD
Must vision baffled in despair retireD
-
What art thou ghostly visitant of flameE
Wouldst thou 'neath closer scrutiny resolveF
In myriad suns that constellations frameE
Around which life blest satellites revolveF
Like those unnumbered orbs which nightly creepG
In dim procession o'er the azure steepG
As white winged caravans the desert sweepG
-
Or art thou still an incandescent massH
Acquiring form as hostile forces urgeI
Through whose vast length continuous lightnings passH
As to and fro its fiery billows surgeI
Whose glowing atoms whirled in ceaseless strifeJ
Where now chaotic anarchy is rifeJ
Shall yet become the fair abodes of lifeJ
-
We know not for the faint exhausted raysK
Which hither on Light's winged coursers comeL
From fires which ages since first lit their blazeK
One instant gleam then perish spent and dumbL
How sad the thought that howsoe'er we yearnM
Of life on yonder glittering orbs to learnM
We read no message and could none returnM
-
Yet this we know yon ring of spectral lightB
Whose distance thrills the soul with solemn aweN
Can ne'er escape in its majestic mightB
The firm control of omnipresent lawO
This mote descending to its bounden placeP
Those suns whose radiance we can scarcely traceP
Alike obey the Power pervading spaceP
