Far from the great lake's prideA
Over the ocean vastB
Two faces picture side by sideA
The future and the pastB
-
On one is the flush of dawnC
And the light of the morning starD
On the other a shade from knowledge drawnC
And the dusk of the sunset barD
-
One brow has the spotless sweepE
Of a page that is white and fairF
The other forehead is graven deepE
With lines of thought and careF
-
The eyes of the child look outG
On a world all pure and sweetH
But those of the man are sad from doubtG
And a knowledge of men's deceitH
-
To the baby's dainty earsI
Only love's accents flowJ
Through the man's alas have surged for yearsI
Stories of crime and woeJ
-
Held in the infant's graspK
Is a tiny lifeless toyL
In the father's firm yet tender claspK
Is his last great hope his boyL
-
Wisely the parent peersI
Through the future's unknown skiesM
For knowledge of life has awakened fearsI
Of the storms that may ariseM
-
When his darling boy no moreN
Can cling to his father's breastO
But when on the strand of the silent shoreN
That father shall be at restO
-
Ah me could the wisdom wonP
Through the father's fateful yearsI
Be but transmitted to the sonP
There were little need for fearsI
-
But each must tread aloneQ
The wine press of his lifeR
Into each cup by Fate is thrownQ
The bitter drops of strifeR
-
Forth from that fond embraceS
Must the little stranger goJ
For the rising sun must mount through spaceS
And the waning sun sink lowJ
