I will bring you into the wilderness of the people andA
there will I plead with you face to face Like as pleadedB
with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt soC
will I plead with you saith the Lord God Ezekiel xxC
D
-
-
It is so ope thine eyes and seeC
What viewest thou all aroundE
A desert where iniquityC
And knowledge both aboundE
-
In the waste howling wildernessC
The Church is wandering stillF
Because we would not onward pressC
When close to Sion's hillF
-
Back to the world we faithless turnedG
And far along the wildH
With labour lost and sorrow earnedG
Our steps have been beguiledH
-
Yet full before us all the whileI
The shadowing pillar staysC
The living waters brightly smileI
The eternal turrets blazeC
-
Yet Heaven is raining angels' breadJ
To be our daily foodK
And fresh as when it first was shedJ
Springs forth the SAVIOUR'S bloodB
-
From every region race and speechL
Believing myriads throngM
Till far as sin and sorrow reachL
Thy grace is spread alongM
-
Till sweetest nature brightest artN
Their votive incense bringO
And every voice and every heartN
Own Thee their God and KingO
-
All own but few alas will loveP
Too like the recreant bandQ
That with Thy patient spirit stroveR
Upon the Red sea strandQ
-
O Father of long suffering graceC
Thou who hast sworn to stayS
Pleading with sinners face to faceC
Through all their devious wayS
-
How shall we speak to Thee O LORDT
Or how in silence lieU
Look on us and we are abhorredT
Turn from us and we dieU
-
Thy guardian fire Thy guiding cloudV
Still let them gild our wallW
Nor be our foes and Thine allowedV
To see us faint and fallW
-
Too oft within this camp of ThineX
Rebellions murmurs riseC
Sin cannot bear to see Thee shineX
So awful to her eyesC
-
Fain would our lawless hearts escapeY
And with the heathen beC
To worship every monstrous shapeY
In fancied darkness freeC
-
Vain thought that shall not be at allW
Refuse we or obeyS
Our ears have heard the Almighty's callW
We cannot be as theyS
-
We cannot hope the heathen's doomZ
To whom GOD'S Son is givenA2
Whose eyes have seen beyond the tombZ
Who have the key of HeavenA2
-
Weak tremblers on the edge of woeC
Yet shrinking from true blissC
Our rest must be no rest belowC
And let our prayer be thisC
-
LORD wave again Thy chastening rodB2
Till every idol throneC2
Crumble to dust and Thou O GODB2
Reign in our hearts aloneC2
-
Bring all our wandering fancies homeD2
For Thou hast every spellE2
And 'mid the heathen where they roamD2
Thou knowest LORD too wellE2
-
Thou know'st our service sad and hardF2
Thou know'st us fond and frailG2
Win us to be loved and sparedH2
When all the world shall failG2
-
So when at last our weary daysC
Are well nigh wasted hereI2
And we can trace Thy wondrous waysC
In distance calm and clearJ2
-
When in Thy love and Israel's sinK2
We read our story trueL2
We may not all too late beginK2
To wish our hopes were newL2
-
Long loved long tried long spared as theyS
Unlike in this aloneC2
That by Thy grace our hearts shall stayS
For evermore Thine ownC2
