Years Ago. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBBBAACC DDEEBBFFCC GGHHIIJKCC BBLLMBBCCAnnie I dreamed a strange dream last night | A |
At my bedside I dreamed you stood clad in white | A |
Your dark curly hair 'round your snow white brow | B |
Are those locks as raven and curly now | B |
And those rosebud lips which in days lang syne | B |
I have kissed and blest because they were mine | B |
And thine eyes soft light | A |
Shone as mellow and bright | A |
As it did years ago | C |
Years ago | C |
- | |
And I fancy I heard the soft soothing sound | D |
Of thy voice that sweet melody breathed all around | D |
Whilst enraptured I gazed and once more the sweet smile | E |
Made sunshine my sorrowing heart to beguile | E |
And thy milkwhite hands stroked my heated brow | B |
Oh what would I give could I feel them now | B |
But alas Woe is me | F |
No more can it be | F |
As it was years ago | C |
Years ago | C |
- | |
I awoke with a gnawing pain at my heart | G |
The vision had vanished but oh the smart | G |
Of the wound which no time can ever heal | H |
Was a torment which only lost souls can feel | H |
Yet in spite of the pain the woe the despair | I |
I dote as I look on a lock of dark hair | I |
That I culled from the head | J |
Of the loveliest maid | K |
Many long years ago | C |
Years ago | C |
- | |
Will fate ever bring us together again | B |
Will my heart never know a surcease from pain | B |
Are the dark locks I worshipped now mingled with grey | L |
Has Time stolen brightness and beauty away | L |
I care not for years have but made thee more dear | M |
But my longing is vain | B |
Thou wilt ne'er come again | B |
Lost lost years ago | C |
Years ago | C |
