Down in a cellar cottageA
In a dark and lonely streetB
Was sat a widow and her boyC
With nothing left to eatB
-
The night was wild and stormyD
The wind howl'd round the doorE
And heavy rain drops from aboveF
Kept dripping to the floorE
-
They had no candle burningG
The fire was long since deadH
A wretched heap of straw was allI
They had to call a bedH
-
They nestled close togetherJ
On the cold and dampy groundK
And as the storm rush'd past themL
They trembled at the soundK
-
Mother the poor boy whisperedM
May I not go againN
I do not heed the wind motherJ
I'm not afraid of rainO
-
May I not go and beg motherJ
For you are very illP
Some one will give me somethingG
Mother I'm sure they willP
-
Do let me go and try motherJ
You know I won't be longQ
I did feel weak and tired motherJ
But now I feel quite strongQ
-
Give me a kiss before I goR
And pray whilst I'm awayS
That I may meet some Christian friendT
Who will not say me nayS
-
Dear boy the night is stormyD
Your ragged clothes are thinU
And soon the heavy rain dropsV
Will wet you to the skinU
-
I would go out myself boyC
But oh I cannot riseW
I am too weak to dry the tearsX
That roll down from my eyesW
-
I fear I soon must go loveF
And leave my boy aloneY
And oh what can you do loveF
When I am dead and goneZ
-
Mother you set me weepingG
Don't talk in such a strainO
Your tears are worse for me to bearA2
Than all the wind and rainO
-
Wait till I'm rather biggerJ
And then I'll work all dayS
And shan't we both be happyD
When I bring you home my payS
-
Then you shall have some tea motherJ
And bread as white as snowR
You won't be sickly then motherJ
You'll soon get well I knowR
-
And when that time shall come motherJ
You shall have some Sunday clothesB2
Then you can go to church motherJ
You cannot go in thoseC2
-
And then I'll take you walkingG
And you shall see the flowersD2
And sit upon the sweet green grassE2
Beneath the trees for hoursD2
-
But I will haste away motherJ
I won't be long good byeF2
Farewell my boy she murmuredM
Then she laid her down to dieF2
-
-
-
The lamps were dimly shiningG
And the waters in a floodG2
Came rolling o'er the pavementH2
Where the little beggar stoodI2
-
He listened for a footstepJ2
Then he hurried on the streetB
But the wind roared with such furyD
Till he scarce could keep his feetB
-
A few there were who passed himK2
But they had no time to stayS
They did not even stop to lookL2
But hurried quick awayS
-
He passed the marts of businessM2
Where the gaslights were ablazeN2
And saw the countless heaps of thingsO2
Displayed to meet the gazeN2
-
One window held him spell boundK
From end to end 'twas piledP2
With loaves of bread a tempting sightQ2
To a half famished childP2
-
He clapped his little cold wet handsR2
And almost danced for joyC
It seemed a glimpse of paradiseS2
To that poor hungry boyC
-
With timid step he ventured inU
And trembling thus beganT2
Please sir I've come to beg for breadH
Do help me if you canT2
-
I do not want it for myselfU2
My mother too shall shareA2
Do give me just one little crustV2
If you've a crust to spareA2
-
Give cried the shopman in a rageW2
What shall we live to seeD
Go tell your mother she must workX2
And earn her bread like meD
-
But mother sir is very sickY2
She cannot work I'm sureZ2
Father died some months agoR
And left us very poorA3
-
She has not tasted food for daysN2
And die I fear she mustV2
Unless you'll help us Christian sirJ
Do spare a little crustV2
-
I'll spare you nothing saucy impB3
Away this moment runC3
And tell your sickly motherJ
I cannot thus be doneC3
-
He left the shop and in the streetB
He sat him down to cryF2
He heard the trampling of the feetB
Of those who passed him byF2
-
He could not ask anotherJ
For his every hope had fledH
'Tis sad that in a land like thisD3
A child needs beg for breadH
-
Wet cold and faint he reached his homeE3
No richer than beforeE
And noiselessly he entered inU
And gently closed the doorE
-
There is no sound the mother sleepsF3
Then groping for the bedH
He bent his weak and stiffened kneesG3
And bowed his weary headH
-
And pray'd that God would grant them helpH3
And bring them safely throughI3
The whisper'd prayer was borne aboveF
Was heard and answered tooI3
-
And when the morning's sun looked inU
And filled the place with lightQ2
Two lifeless bodies on the strawJ3
Was all that met the sightQ2
-
Thus were they found alone and deadH
No reason left to showR
How they had come to that sad endT
And no one cared to knowR
