Draw closer to my side to nightA
Dear wife give me thy handB
My heart is sad with memoriesC
Which thou canst understandB
Its twenty years this very dayD
I know thou minds it wellE
Since o'er our happy wedded lifeF
The heaviest trouble fellE
-
We stood beside the little cotG
But not a word we saidH
With breaking hearts we learned alasI
Our little Claude was deadH
He was the last child born to usJ
The loveliest the bestK
I sometimes fear we loved him moreL
Than any of the restK
-
We tried to say Thy will be doneM
We strove to be resignedN
But all in vain our loss had leftO
Too deep a wound behindN
I saw the tears roll down thy cheekP
And shared thy miseryQ
But could not speak a soothing wordR
I could but grieve with theeQ
-
He looked so calm so sweet so fairS
Why should we stand and weepT
Death had but paused a moment thereS
And put our pet to sleepT
The weary hours crept sadly onU
Until the burial dayD
Then in the deep cold gravel graveV
We saw him laid awayD
-
His little bed was taen apartW
His toys put out of sightA
His brother and his sister soonX
Grew gay again and brightA
But we dear wife we ne'er threw offY
The sorrow o'er us castZ
And even yet at times we grieveA2
Though twenty years have passedZ
-
We know he's in a better landB
A heaven where all is blissB2
Nor would we try if we'd the powerC2
To bring him back to thisB2
Draw closer to my side dear wifeF
And wipe away that tearS
Heaven does not seem so far awayD
I seem to feel him nearD2
-
He'll come no more with us to dwellE
For our life's lamp burns dimE2
But He who doeth all things wellE
Will draw us up to HimE2
Come closer wife let us not partW
We have not long to waitF2
A something whispers to my heartW
Claude's waiting at the GateF2
