The Open Gates Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEFEGG HIJIKK LCLCMN OPOPQQ ORORSS

My heart was sad when first we metA
'Yet with a smileB
A welcome smile I ne'er forgetA
Thou didst beguileB
My sighs and sorrows and a sweet delightC
Shed a soft radiance where erst was nightC
-
I dreamed not we should meet againD
But fate was kindE
Once more my heart o'er fraught with painF
To joy inclinedE
It seemed thy soul had power to penetrateG
My inmost self changing at will my stateG
-
Then sprang the thought Be thou my QueenH
I will be slaveI
Make here thy throne and reign supremeJ
'Tis all I craveI
Let me within thy soothing influence dwellK
Content to know with thee all must be wellK
-
I knew not that another claimedL
By prior rightC
Those charms that had my breast inflamedL
With fancies brightC
Ah then I recognized my lonelinessM
My dreams dispelled still I admired no lessN
-
Time wearily dragged on its wayO
We met once moreP
And thou wert free Oh happy dayO
As sight of shoreP
Cheers the worn mariner so sight of theeQ
Made my heart beat with sweet expectancyQ
-
Is it too much to hope somedayO
This heart of mineR
That beats alone for thee yet mayO
Thy love enshrineR
All things are said to come to him who waitsS
I'm waiting darling Love opes wide the gatesS
