Merrily rang out the midnight bellsA
Glad tidings of joy for allB
As crouched a little shiv'ring childC
Close by the churchyard wallB
The snow and sleet were pitilessD
The wind played with her ragsE
She beat her bare half frozen feetF
Upon the heartless flagsE
A tattered shawl she tightly heldG
With one hand round her breastH
Whilst icicles shone in her hairI
Like gems in gold impressedH
But on her pale wan cheeks the tearsJ
That fell too fast to freezeK
Rolled down as soft she murmuredL
Do buy my matches pleaseK
-
Wee weak inheritor of wantM
She heard the Christmas chimesN
Perchance her fancy wrought out dreamsO
Of by gone better timesN
The days before her mother diedP
When she was warmly cladQ
When food was plenty and her heartR
From morn to night was gladQ
-
Her father now is lying sickS
She soon may be aloneT
He cannot use his spade and pickS
As once he could have doneU
The workhouse door stands open wideP
But should he enter thereI
They'd tear his darling from his sideP
And place her anywhereI
They'd call it charitable helpV
Though breaking both their heartsW
But then when in adversityX
Folks have to bear the smartsW
-
Some carriages go rolling byY
Gay laughter greets her earsZ
She envies not their better lotA2
She only sheds more tearsJ
And now and then a passing stepB2
Will cause the tears to ceaseC2
As fainter fainter comes the plaintA2
Do buy my matches pleaseK
-
-
Darker the sky colder the windA2
The bells are silent nowD2
She creeps still closer to the wallB
And sinks upon the snowE2
The sound of revelry no moreF2
Disturbs her weary earG2
Sleep conquers cold and pain and griefH2
Oblivion shuts out fearI2
The snow drifts to the churchyard wallB
The graves with white are spreadA2
But those gray walls do not encloseJ2
All of the near by deadA2
-
The wind has ta'en the snowflakesK2
And gently as it mightA2
Has spread a shroud o'er one more lostA2
And hid it from the sightA2
-
I would not wake her if I couldA2
'Twas well for her she diedA2
Her spirit floated out uponL2
The bells of ChristmastideA2
She breathed no prayer nor thought of HeavenU
Her last faint words were theseK
As time merged in eternityA2
Do buy my matches pleaseK
-
But surely angels would be thereI
To shield her from all harmM2
And in Christ's loving bosomN2
She could nestle and get warmO2
-
The wifeless childless stricken manP2
Lies moaning in his painQ2
Come let me bless thee e'er I dieA2
But she never came againR2
