A little lad but thinly cladA
All day had roamed the streetB
With stitled groans and aching bonesC
He beg'd for bread to eatB
-
The wind blew shrill from o'er the hiliD
And shook his scanty ragsE
Whilst cold and sleet benumbed his feetB
As plodding o'er the flagsE
-
The night drew on with thick'ning gloomF
He hailed each passer byG
For help to save but nought they gaveH
Then he sat down to cryG
-
It was a noble porticoI
'Neath which the beggar steptB
And none would guess one in distressJ
There shiv'ring sat and weptB
-
But soon the door was open thrownK
The Dean a goodly manL
Who lived within had heard a moanK
And came the cause to scanL
-
Ah little boy what want you hereM
On such a bitter nightB
Run home at once you little dunceJ
Or you'll be frozen quiteB
-
The boy looked at his cheery faceJ
Yet hid his own in dreadB
I meant no harm the place was warmN
And I am begging breadB
-
And if you can a morsel spareO
I'll thank you oh so muchP
For all day long I've begged and sungQ
And never had a touchP
-
Step in then said the kindly manL
And stand here in the hallD
You shall have bread poor starving childB
I promise you you shallD
-
And off he went and soon returnedB
With a thin tempting sliceJ
And little Jemmy dapt his handsJ
And cried Oh Sir that's niceJ
-
And what's your name come tell me thatB
My name is Jimmy PoolD
And do you always beg all dayB
Instead of going to schoolD
-
And can you read and can you writeB
Poor Jimmy shook his headB
No sir I have to beg all dayB
At night I go to bedB
-
My mother lays me on the floorR
Upon a little rugS
And I ne'er think of nothing moreR
When I'm so warm and snugS
-
Sometimes I wake and when I doB
Unless it's almost dayB
She's always there upon her chairO
Working the night awayB
-
It isn't much that she can makeT
Sometimes I think she'd dieB
But for her little Jimmy's sakeT
There's only her and IB
-
And do you ever pray my boyU
No sir I never triedB
I never heard a praying wordB
Since my poor Daddy diedB
-
Then let me teach you little boyU
Just come now let me seeJ
I know you'll manage if you tryB
Now say it after meJ
-
Our Father Our Father rightB
That art in heaven go onV
Jimmy repeated every wordB
Until the prayer was doneW
-
Then turning up his hazel eyesJ
Which questioning light shone throughB
He said that prayer sounds very niceJ
Is He your Father tooB
-
Yes He is mine as well as yoursJ
And Lord of all you seeJ
Far as I know if that be soJ
My brother you must beJ
-
Yes we are brethren every oneW
All equal in His sightB
Well I will try to think so sirX
But I can't believe it quiteB
-
It seems so strange that you should beJ
Akin to such as meJ
For you are rich and great and grandB
And I'm so poor you seeJ
-
But it is true my little ladB
And if to Him you prayB
He'll make your little heart feel gladB
He'll turn you not awayB
-
Well if that's so I'll learn to prayB
I'll take your kind adviceJ
But if you are my brotherX
Give me just one thicker sliceJ
-
And if He's Father of us allD
Now as I'm going homeY
From your big share perhaps you'll spareO
Your widowed sister someZ
-
The Dean's face wore a puzzled lookA2
And then a look of joyU
Then said 'tis you the teacher areB2
I am the scholar boyU
-
That night the widow's eyes were wetB
But they were tears of joyU
'When she beheld the load of thingsJ
Brought by her little boyU
-
And Jimmy danced upon the flagsJ
And cried there's few have seenC2
And ever thought that in these ragsJ
Stands brother to a DeanC2
