Th' Demon O' Debt. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGDDD HIHIDDDD AJAJEDED

We read ov a man once possessed ov a devilA
An pity his sorrowful caseB
But at this day we fancy we're free from sich evilA
An noa mooar have that trubble to faceB
But dooan't be deceived for yo're nooan aght o' dangerC
Ther's a trap for yor feet ready setD
An if to sich sorrow yo'd still be a strangerC
Be careful to keep aght o' debtD
-
For debt is a demon 'at nivver shows pityE
An when once yor fast in his gripF
Yo may try to luk wise or appear to be wittyE
But he'll drive yo to wreck wi' his whipF
He tempts yo to start wi' a little at furstG
An then deeper an deeper yo getD
Till at last yo find aght 'at yor life is accurstD
An yo grooan under th' burden o' debtD
-
Then sweet sleep forsakes yo an tossin wi' careH
Yo wearily wear neet awayI
An yor joys an yor hopes have all turned to despairH
An yo tremmel at th' commin o' dayI
Yor een are daancast as yo walk along th' streetD
An yo shun friends yo once gladly metD
The burden yo carry yo fancy they see 'tD
That soul crushin burden o' debtD
-
Tak an old man's advice if yo'd keep aght o' trubbleA
An let 'pay as yo goa ' be yor planJ
Tho' yor comforts are fewer yor joys will be doubleA
An yo'll hold up yor heead like a manJ
Better far wear a patch on yor elbow or kneeE
Till yo're able a new suit to getD
Nor be dressed like a prince an whearivver yo beE
To be dog'd wi' that Demon o' DebtD
