Oh that the generous rich would but think | F |
As they scatter their wealth far and wide | D |
Of the evil that lives in the ocean of drink | F |
Of the thousands that sink in its tide | D |

The victim of custom and laws | H |
But never attempt the strong arm to outstretch | G |
To try to abolish the cause | I |
The preacher as well may his eloquence spare | J |
Nor his tales of glad tidings need tell | K |
If by precepts he urge them for heaven to prepare | J |
Whilst his practice leads downward to hell | K |

Erect new asylums and hospitals raise | L |
Build prisons for creatures of sin | M |
Can these be a means to improve the world's ways | L |
Or one soul from destruction e'er win | M |
No License the cause and encourage the sale | N |
Of the evil one's strongest ally | O |
And in vain then lament that the curse should prevail | N |
And in vain o'er the fallen ones sigh | O |

Strike the black blot from the laws of the land | D |
And take the temptation away | P |
Then give to the struggling and weak one's a hand | D |
To pilot them on the safe way | P |
Can brewers distillers or traffickers pray | P |
For the blessing of God on the seed | D |
Which they sow for the harvest of men gone astray | P |
Of ruin the fruit of their greed | D |

That will hinder its power for ill | C |
For a way to work mischief it surely will find | D |
Let us watch and contrive as we will | C |
Then drive out the monster The plague breathing pest | D |
