Bonny little Blue bellsA
Mid young brackens greenB
'Neath the hedgerows peepingC
Modestly betweenB
Telling us that SummerD
Is not far awayE
When your beauties blend withF
Blossoms of the MayE
-
Sturdy tangled hawthornsG
Fleck'd with white or redH
Whilst their nutty incenseI
All around is shedH
Bonny drooping Blue bellsA
Happy you must beJ
With your beauties shelteredK
'Neath such fragrant treeJ
-
You need fear no rivalL
Other blossoms blownM
With their varied beautiesN
But enhance your ownM
Steals the soft wind gentlyJ
'Round th' enchanted spotO
Sets your bells a ringingC
Though we hear them notO
-
Idle Fancy wandersP
As you shake and swingC
Our hearts shape the messageQ
We would have you bringC
Dreams of happy SpringtimesP
We hope yet to shareR
Vague but pleasant visionsP
All to melt in airR
-
Children's merry voicesP
Break your witching spellsP
Chubby hands are claspingC
Languishing Blue bellsP
Gay and happy childrenS
Hop and skip alongC
With their ringing laughterD
Sweet as skylark's songC
-
Slowly soon I followT
Through the rustic laneU
But the sight that greets meJ
Gives me pang of painU
Strewed upon the pathwayE
Fairy Blue bells lieV
Trampled crushed and wiltedW
Cast away to dieV
-
Yet they lived not vainlyJ
Though their life was briefX
Shedding gleams of gladnessP
O'er a world of griefX
And they taught a lessonS
Rightly understoodY
By their mute endeavourD
Striving to do goodY
