Dear little Alice lay dyingA
I see her as if 'twas to dayB
And we stood round her snowy bed cryingA
And watching her life ebb awayB
-
'Twas a beautiful day in the springA
The sun shone out warmly and clearC
And the wee birds their love songs to singA
Came and perched on the trees that grew nearC
-
In the distance the glistening seaD
Could be heard in a deep solemn toneE
As if murmuring in sad sympathyD
For our griefs and our hopes that had flownE
-
The windows wide open allowedF
The soft wind to fan her white cheekG
As with uncovered heads mutely bowedF
We stood watching not daring to speakG
-
We were only her playmates no tieH
Of relationship drew us that wayB
We'd been told that dear Alice must dieH
And she'd begg'd she might see us that dayB
-
We were all full of sorrow and tearsI
We all shed but not one showed surpriseJ
Of her future we harboured no fearsK
For we knew she was fit for the skiesJ
-
Ever gentle and kind as a doveL
To each one she knew she had beenM
She had ruled her dominion by loveL
And we all paid her homage as QueenN
-
Her strange beauty now as I look backO
I can see as I ne'er saw it thenP
But words to describe it I lackO
It could never be told by a penP
-
Half asleep half awake as she layB
With her golden curls round her pale faceQ
A smile round her lips 'gan to playB
And her eyes gazed intently on spaceQ
-
With an effort she half raised her headR
And looked lovingly round us on allS
Then she motioned us nearer the bedR
And we silently answered her callS
-
Then she put out her tiny white handT
The friend nearest her took it in hisU
And so faintly she whispered Good byeH
As he printed upon it a kissV
-
One by one boy and girl did the sameW
And she bade them 'farewell' as they passedX
Calling everyone by their nameW
'Till it came to my turn I was lastX
-
Good bye Harry she breathed very lowY
And her eyes to my soul seemed to speakG
And she strove not to let my hand goY
Till I stooped down and kissed her pale cheekG
-
Then she wearily laid down her headR
And she closed her blue eyes with a sighH
Don't forget me dear Harry when deadR
But meet me in Heaven by and byeH
-
And that whisper I never forgotZ
And her hand's dying clasp I feel stillA2
For I swore that whatever my lotZ
I'd be true to that child and I willA2
-
It may be a foolish conceitB2
But it oft is a solace for meD
To think when life's troubles I meetB2
There's an angel in Heaven cares for meD
-
Friends deplore my lone bachelor stateC2
Some may pity and others derideD2
But they know not for Alice I waitC2
Who took with her my heart when she diedD2
