A Song Of The Snow Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDDEEAA AAFFGGHIAA AAJJKKLLAA AAMMAANNAA

Oh the snow the bright fleecy snowA
Isn't it grand when the north breezes blowA
Isn't it bracing the ice to skim o'erB
With a jovial friend or the one you adoreC
How the ice crackles and how the skates ringD
How friends flit past you like birds on the wingD
How the gay laugh ripples through the clear airE
How bloom the roses on cheeks of the fairE
Few are the pleasures that life can bestowA
To equal the charms of the beautiful snowA
-
Oh the snow the pitiless snowA
Cruel and cold as the shelterless knowA
Huddled in nooks on the mud or the flagsF
Wrapp'd in a few scanty fluttering ragsF
Gently it rests on the roof and the spireG
And filling the streets with its slush and the mireG
Freezing the life out of poor starving soulsH
Wild whirling and drifting as Boreas howlsI
Hard is their lot who have no where to goA
To shelter from storm and the merciless snowA
-
Oh the snow the treacherous snowA
Up in a garret on pallet laid lowA
Dying of hunger oh sad is her fateJ
No food in the cupboard no fire in the grateJ
A widening streak of frost crystals are shedK
Through the window's broke pane on the comfortless bedK
And the child that she clasps to her chill milkless breastL
Has ended its troubles and gone to its restL
Husbandless childless and friendless Go slowA
She sleeps with her babe and their shroud is the snowA
-
Oh the snow the health giving snowA
Setting the cheeks of the children aglowA
Father and mother well fed and well cladM
Join in the frolic like young lass and ladM
Little they dream of the suffering and woeA
Of those shivering outcasts with nowhere to goA
Then they read from their paper with quivering breathN
Accounts of poor wand'rers found frozen to deathN
And their hearts with pure pity perchance overflowA
But it vanishes soon like the beautiful snowA
