To John C. Freemont Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDEEDFCFCGCGCHHII JJKCKC

THY error Fr mont simply was to actA
A brave man's part without the statesman's tactA
And taking counsel but of common senseB
To strike at cause as well as consequenceC
Oh never yet since Roland wound his hornD
At Roncesvalles has a blast been blownE
Far heard wide echoed startling as thine ownE
Heard from the van of freedom's hope forlornD
It had been safer doubtless for the timeF
To flatter treason and avoid offenceC
To that Dark Power whose underlying crimeF
Heaves upward its perpetual turbulenceC
But if thine be the fate of all who breakG
The ground for truth's seed or forerun their yearsC
Till lost in distance or with stout hearts makeG
A lane for freedom through the level spearsC
Still take thou courage God has spoken through theeH
Irrevocable the mighty words Be freeH
The land shakes with them and the slave's dull earI
Turns from the rice swamp stealthily to hearI
Who would recall them now must first arrestJ
The winds that blow down from the free NorthwestJ
Ruffling the Gulf or like a scroll roll backK
The Mississippi to its upper springsC
Such words fulfil their prophecy and lackK
But the full time to harden into thingsC
