R. S. S., At Deer Island On The Merrimac Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBACDDCEFFEGG

Make for he loved thee well our MerrimacA
From wave and shore a low and long lamentB
For him whose last look sought thee as he wentB
The unknown way from which no step comes backA
And ye O ancient pine trees at whose feetC
He watched in life the sunset's reddening glowD
Let the soft south wind through your needles blowD
A fitting requiem tenderly and sweetC
No fonder lover of all lovely thingsE
Shall walk where once he walked no smile more gladF
Greet friends than his who friends in all men hadF
Whose pleasant memory to that Island clingsE
Where a dear mourner in the home he leftG
Of love's sweet solace cannot be bereftG
