On The Young Statesmen Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAAB CCACA ADAAB EFGGH IJKIJ ALAAL

CLARENDON had law and senseA
Clifford was fierce and braveB
Bennet's grave look was a pretenceA
And Danby's matchless impudenceA
Help'd to support the knaveB
-
But Sunderland Godolphin LoryC
These will appear such chits in storyC
'Twill turn all politics to jestsA
To be repeated like John DoryC
When fiddlers sing at feastsA
-
Protect us mighty ProvidenceA
What would these madmen haveD
First they would bribe us without penceA
Deceive us without common senseA
And without power enslaveB
-
Shall free torn men in humble aweE
Submit to servile shameF
Who from consent and custom drawG
The same right to be ruled by lawG
Which kings pretend to reignH
-
The duke shall wield his conquering swordI
The chancellor make a speechJ
The king shall pass his honest wordK
The pawn'd revenue sums affordI
And then come kiss my breechJ
-
So have I seen a king on chessA
His rooks and knights withdrawnL
His queen and bishops in distressA
Shifting about grow less and lessA
With here and there a pawnL
