Rhyme Scheme: A BBCCDDEEFFGHIIJJIIII KKIIIILLJJJJJJJIIPrologue To The University Of Oxford Spoken By Mr Hart At The Acting Of The Silent Woman | A |

- | |
No poor Dutch peasant wing'd with all his fear | B |
Flies with more haste when the French arms draw near | B |
Than we with our poetic train come down | C |
For refuge hither from the infected town | C |
Heaven for our sins this summer has thought fit | D |
To visit us with all the plagues of wit | D |
A French troop first swept all things in its way | E |
But those hot Monsieurs were too quick to stay | E |
Yet to our cost in that short time we find | F |
They left their itch of novelty behind | F |
The Italian Merry Andrews took their place | G |
And quite debauch'd the stage with lewd grimace | H |
Instead of wit and humours your delight | I |
Was there to see two hobby horses fight | I |
Stout Scaramoucha with rush lance rode in | J |
And ran a tilt at centaur Arlequin | J |
For love you heard how amorous asses bray'd | I |
And cats in gutters gave their serenade | I |
Nature was out of countenance and each day | I |
Some new born monster shown you for a play | I |
But when all fail'd to strike the stage quite dumb | K |
Those wicked engines call'd machines are come | K |
Thunder and lightning now for wit are play'd | I |
And shortly scenes in Lapland will be laid | I |
Art magic is for poetry profess'd | I |
And cats and dogs and each obscener beast | I |
To which Egyptian dotards once did bow | L |
Upon our English stage are worshipp'd now | L |
Witchcraft reigns there and raises to renown | J |
Macbeth and Simon Magus of the town | J |
Fletcher's despised your Jonson's out of fashion | J |
And wit the only drug in all the nation | J |
In this low ebb our wares to you are shown | J |
By you those staple authors' worth is known | J |
For wit's a manufacture of your own | J |
When you who only can their scenes have praised | I |
We'll boldly back and say their price is raised | I |
