A Northern Suburb Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF EGEG HDHD GIGI JEJE

Nature selects the longest wayA
And winds about in tortuous groovesB
A thousand years the oaks decayA
The wrinkled glacier hardly movesB
-
But here the whetted fangs of changeC
Daily devour the old demesneD
The busy farm the quiet grangeC
The wayside inn the village greenD
-
In gaudy yellow brick and redE
With rooting pipes like creepers rankF
The shoddy terraces o'erspreadE
Meadow and garth and daisied bankF
-
With shelves for rooms the houses crowdE
Like draughty cupboards in a rowG
Ice chests when wintry winds are loudE
Ovens when summer breezes blowG
-
Roused by the fee'd policeman's knockH
And sad that day should come againD
Under the stars the workmen flockH
In haste to reach the workmen's trainD
-
For here dwell those who must fulfilG
Dull tasks in uncongenial spheresI
Who toil through dread of coming illG
And not with hope of happier yearsI
-
The lowly folk who scarcely dareJ
Conceive themselves perhaps misplacedE
Whose prize for unremitting careJ
Is only not to be disgracedE
