SHE would not keep at home the foolish woman	A
She would not mind her precious girls and boys	B
She had to go for it was Sunday morning	C
Down the hot road and to the barren pew	D
And there abuse her superannuate knees	E
To make a prayer	F

She had a huge petition on her bosom	G
A heavy weight for such a lean old thing	C
Her youngest boy made merry in the village	H
And had not entered into the communion	A
And having labored with him long for nothing	C
She meant to ask of God to save him yet	I
Thank God she asked that favor	J

The manner of it echoes still in Heaven	A
Before she dared to utter her desire	J
The strange old woman made approach to God	K
With many a low obeisance and abasement	K
As having done so many things she ought not	K

And left undone so many things she ought	K
And being altogether very wicked	K
She testified she had not kept his temple	L
Which was her heart all swept and white and ready	K
She testified it O the shameless woman	A
The spotless housekeeper	J

Now God sat beaming on his burnished throne	M
And swept creation with appraising eye	N
Finding I fear not all was free from blemish	O
Yet keeping his magnificent composure	J
But wearing certain necessary airs	P
To suit with such incumbency of court	K
He still at heart was quite a gentleman	A
For when he saw that aged lady drooping	C
And wearying her bones with genuflections	P
For her unworthiness he fell ashamed	K
To think how hard it went with holy women	A
To ease their poor predicaments by prayer	F
There on his heaven and heard of all the hosts	P
He groaned he made a mighty face so wry	N
That several seraphin forgot their harping	C
And scolded thus 'O what a wicked woman	A
To shrew his splendid features out of shape '	-
