THE country farmer has his joysA
Of little city girls and boysA
When brother Thomas brings his broodB
Of motherless brats in Christmas moodB
To try our country air and foodB
And O what splendid pies and cakesC
Their pleased and pretty grandma makesC
And O what squeals and stomach achesC
-
-
Poor Thomas shepherds him a flockD
Of city souls as hard as rockD
And though they will not fill his larderE
He only preaches Christ the harderE
But Ann though seven years my nieceF
Is still a pagan little pieceF
And as she often hints to meG
She hates the sound of pietyG
Fair Inez is my ancient setterE
Who lies by the fire when we will let herE
Alas this amiable dogH
Heard all the bitter dialogueH
That passed between my niece and brotherE
Misunderstanding one anotherE
-
-
ANNI
Father what will there be for meG
To morrow on the Christmas treeG
Have you told Santa what to bringJ
My pony my doll and everythingJ
-
-
THOMASK
My daughter Santa will know bestL
What to bring you and what the restL
But father and his little girlM
And everybody in the worldN
Should dwell to night on higher thingsO
For hark the herald angel singsO
And in a manger poor and lowlyG
Lies little Jesus high and holyG
-
-
ANNI
Father don't talk of little JesusK
You're only doing it to tease usK
It isn't nearly time for bedP
And I want to know what Santa saidP
-
-
THOMASK
Jesus is better than any toysA
For little sinning girls and boysA
For Jesus saves but sin destroysA
-
-
And O it gives him sad surpriseQ
There must be tears in Jesus' eyesQ
When little girls with bad behaviorE
Forget to own their Lord and SaviorE
-
-
ANNI
I didn't you know it isn't trueR
I say my prayers I always doR
I know about Jesus very wellS
And God the Father Heaven and HellS
O please don't say it any moreT
You've said it so many times beforeT
But tell me all about Santa insteadP
And about the horns on his reindeer's headP
And what he will bring me on his sledP
-
-
THOMASK
This night he was born on earth for usK
And can my daughter mock him thusK
And care more for her worldly pleasuresU
Than Jesus' love and heavenly treasuresU
For Jesus didn't like to beG
So crowned with thorns and nailed to treeG
But there was a sinful world to freeG
And out he went to GethsemaneI
-
-
ANNI
And left the twelve and went apartV
O father I know it off by heartV
Please father please don't finish it outW
There's so much else to talk aboutW
I ask about Santa and there you goX
And now you're spoiling my Christmas soX
And you are the wickedest man I knowX
-
-
Disgraceful scenes require the curtainI
But lest the moral be uncertainI
I briefly bring the good reportY
That valiant Thomas held the fortY
And wicked Ann was quite defeatedZ
In vain denied in vain entreatedZ
In vain she wailed in vain she weptZ
And said a briny prayer and sleptZ
While Inez who had been perplexedZ
To see good kinsfolk so much vexedZ
When peace descended on the twainI
Lay down beside the fire againI
