I'll lay me down on the green swardA
Mid yellowcups and speedwell blueB
And pay the world no more regardC
But be to Nature leal and trueB
Who break the peace of hapless manD
But they who Truth and Nature wrongE
I'll hear no more of evil's planD
But live with Nature and her songE
-
Where Nature's lights and shades are greenF
Where Nature's place is strewn with flowersG
Where strife and care are never seenF
There I'll retire to happy hoursG
And stretch my body on the greenF
And sleep among the flowers in bloomH
By eyes of malice seldom seenF
And dream upon the days to comeI
-
I'll lay me by the forest greenF
I'll lay me on the pleasant grassJ
My life shall pass away unseenF
I'll be no more the man I wasK
The tawny bee upon the flowerL
The butterfly upon the leafM
Like them I'll live my happy hourL
A life of sunshine bright and briefM
-
In greenwood hedges close at handN
Build brood and sing the little birdsO
The happiest things in the green landN
While sweetly feed the lowing herdsO
While softly bleat the roving sheepP
Upon the green grass will I lieQ
A Summer's day to think and sleepP
Or see the clouds sail down the skyQ
