The Poison-flower Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCBDEFFE GAHHAIJKKJ ILMMLJNOON

IIN the evergreen shade of an Austral woodA
Where the long branches laced aboveB
Through which all day it seemedC
The sweet sunbeams down gleamedC
Like the rays of a young mother's loveB
When she hides her glad face with her hands and peepsD
At the youngling that crows on her kneeE
'Neath such ray shivered shadeF
In a banksia gladeF
Was this flower first shown to meE
-
A rich pansy it was with a small white lipG
And a wonderful purple hoodA
And your eye caught the sheenH
Of its leaves parrot greenH
Down the dim gothic aisles of the woodA
And its foliage rich on the moistureless sandI
Made you long for its odorous breathJ
But ah 'twas to takeK
To your bosom a snakeK
For its pestilent fragrance was deathJ
-
And I saw it again in a far northern landI
Not a pansy not purple and whiteL
Yet in beauteous guiseM
Did this poison plant riseM
Fair and fatal again to my sightL
And men longed for her kiss and her odorous breathJ
When no friend was beside them to tellN
That to kiss was to dieO
That her truth was a lieO
And her beauty a soul killing spellN
